Mark Carney is the new Canadian Prime Minister

Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on Friday, 14th March, 2025.

Mr. Carney is a Harvard graduate and has completed his Doctoral degree in Economics from Oxford University.

He has been the Governor of The Bank of Canada (2008-2013) and then the Governor of Bank of England (2013-2020). He does not have political experience, but was selected to lead the Liberal Party of Canada on 9th March 2025. He succeeds Mr. Justin Trudeau, who held this role for a decade (2015-2025).

The Prime Minister and the Cabinet were sworn in at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. Soon after taking oath, he addressed members of the Press and the public outside the Hall.

What will he do, immediately?

Canada is in the middle of an impending tariff war with the United States. Relations between the two countries are currently strained.

The other major project is to conduct national elections in Canada.
