Luxembourg makes all public transport free

First country in the world to do so

With a population of 613,000, Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe. But it has a big traffic problem. With the maximum number of cars per 1000 people (in Europe), Luxembourg battles with heavy traffic congestion every day.

Luxembourg is also one of the richest countries in the European Union with the highest per capita GDP (total income of a country divided by its population). Have a look at the table below, it will help you understand the reason behind the traffic problem; therefore, Luxembourg’s move to make all public transport free seems like a
logical move.

From the 1st of March, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make its nationwide public transport (bus, train, or tram) free for the public. However, it excludes the first-class tickets which
remain valid with no change. The free transport ends at the border where a reassessed fee is charged.

This will not just help in tackling the traffic problem but also the bourgeoning environment and climate problem.
