Lucknow Metro – First in India to use UV rays to sanitize trains

India, Jan 30: Lucknow Metro has created a record by using the UV technology to disinfect the train coaches for the first time in India. Its parent company UP Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) took the inspiration of using UV rays for sanitizing from the New York Metro. This is a step forward in fulfilling their commitment towards passengers’ safety and comfort. Passengers have applauded this initiative of Lucknow Metro. The UV sanitization apparatus works on the ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) disinfection method. It has been developed locally by an Indian firm. This apparatus sanitizes the coach in 7 minutes, however, to be extra careful, the coaches are disinfected for 15 minutes. This initiative is also very economical as it costs 1/40th of the cost involved in sprinkling of the manual sanitizers. Lucknow Metro is also a pioneer to have started token sanitization through ‘UV box’ which was developed in-house.

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) – It is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (Ultraviolet C or UV-C) light of 254 nm UV-C to kill or inactivate micro-organisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA.
