India’s Lok Sabha Elections were held in 7 phases between 19 April and 01 June 2024.
The results were announced all day on June 4. The results announcement went on well into the night.
The final tally is as under:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party with 240 seats.
However, the Indian parliament has 543 seats (and 2 nominated seats). This means that to win majority, a party must have 272 seats or more.
No single party has been able to manage that majority.
What happens now?
Sometimes, some political parties come together to form a government. This is called a coalition government.
Two main alliances were formed before the elections – the NDA – National Democratic Alliance, and the I.N.D.I.A Alliance – made up of many parties. The I.N.D.I.A alliance was led by one national party – the Indian National Congress, and had many regional parties like the Trinamul Congress (Bengal), Samajwadi Party (Uttar Pradesh), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Tamil Nadu), Nationalist Congress Party (Maharashtra).
The NDA is led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and supported by the Telugu Desam Party (Andhra Pradesh), and the Janata Dal (U).
In this election, NDA has secured 293 seats. BJP – 240, TDP – 16, Janata Dal (U) – 12.
BJP got 36.56% of all votes polled, while the next highest party, INC, won 99 seats and had 21.19% of the votes cast.
