Mr. Justin Trudeau, who has been the Prime Minister of Canada since 2015, having won three elections – 2015, 2019, and 2021, announced on January 6, 2025 that he is resigning as the leader of the party. This means, effectively, that he will no longer be the Prime Minister of Canada.
The three main opposition parties of Canada intended to introduce a no confidence motion against the Trudeau government on January 27th, when the Parliament was to reconvene.
What happens now?
The Parliament will not convene on January 27th. It has been suspended till March 24th. By that time, the Liberal Party will have to select a new leader. If the opposition parties still wish to bring a no-confidence motion, Canada will have to go to elections by June. Otherwise, if the no-confidence motion is avoided till June 20th, when the Parliament breaks for summer, the elections are likely to be held in October.
