Justice Dhananjay Yeshwant Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. The oath was administered by the President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu.
He succeeds (takes over from) CJI UU Lalit, who took charge in August this year.
About Justice Chandrachud
He will hold office till November 10, 2024.
He has served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, he was appointed to the Supreme Court.
He is an alumni of St. Stephen’s College, Faculty Law College, Delhi University, and the Harvard Law School.
His father, Justice YV Chandrachud, was the 16th Chief Justice of India and is currently the longest serving CJI on record. He was the Chief Justice of India from February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985.
