Jason Kirk wins Nikon Small World competition

Houston (Texas), Sep 15: Jason Kirk is the director of a microscopic-imaging department at the Baylor College of Medicine. The image that won the first prize was taken by him. In order to create the image, he stacked 200 unique images of a Southern Oak leaf.

What you see in purple are the stomata. The blue-green streams are vessels that carry water through
the leaf.
