IUCN’s Red List of threatened animal and plant species – 2020

According to the latest update of IUCN’s (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN) 31 more species have been added to possibly extinct category and 26 species have shown recovery. Also:


 European Bison moved from Vulnerable to Near Threatened.
 Freshwater dolphins and Tucuxi a small grey dolphin in the Amazon are
now classed as Endangered.
 Sharks from South China Sea are Critically Endangered.
 Nine Asian oak trees are considered possibly Extinct.
Red list is a list of information on threats to animals and plant species, habitats, ecology and possible actions needed for conservation.

Currently, there are 128,918 species in the IUCN’s list. It helps in the conservation of plant and animal species which are on the verge of extinction.

Various agencies like wildlife departments, government agencies, conservation-related NGOs, educational institutions, etc. use this data for
different purposes, like initiating conservation actions, learning, etc.
