Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 announced.
The Nobel Prize 2020 in the field of Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton, and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of Hepatitis C Virus at the Nobel Forum, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden on Monday, 5th Oct.
Hepatitis C Virus or HCV causes Hepatitis C infection that leads to inflammation and infection of the liver. The trio’s work helped explain a major source of blood-borne virus, which was not previously explained by hepatitis A or B. Due to their findings, new highly sensitive blood tests are now available. It has also helped in the rapid development of antiviral drugs directed at Hepatitis C. Thanks to their discovery, the disease can now be cured. The prestigious Nobel Prize comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish Kronor (INR 8.21 crore).
