INS Himgiri Launched

First of the three Project 17A ships; Built by GRSE

INS Himgiri, the first of the three Project 17A ships was launched on 14th Dec 2020 in Kolkata. She made her first contact with the waters of Hoogly River at the launch ceremony. General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was the Chief Guest and his spouse, Smt. Madhulika Rawat launched the ship in keeping with the Naval traditions.

P17A ships are indigenously designed by Directorate of Naval Design and are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) and M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineer’s (GRSE) Ltd. Three out of the seven P17A ships are being built by GRSE and remaining by MDL. Himgiri has been built by GRSE.

P17A ships are an initiative in keeping with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Project 17A ships source 80% of the material required for shipbuilding from local and indigenous vendors and provide employment opportunity for over 2000 Indian firms.
P17A ships are the first to use gas turbine propulsion and host the largest combat platform ever built by GRSE.
