Delhi, June 23: Two important developments happened this week:
- On June 21st, India made its vaccination program free for all citizens.
- India’s vaccine, Covaxin, released the results of its third phase trials. These results are needed, not just to understand the efficacy of the vaccine, but also to get WHO approval for this vaccine.
Here is a quick update on what has happened since then.
India administered a record 90,86,514 vaccines on the first day of vaccination.
91% of these were first doses. This means that these people entered the vaccination drive for thefirst time.
Since then, there has been a downward trend in most states. The map here shows two important trends related to the vaccination:
The areas in green – Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are the only regions that have displayed a consistently upward trend of vaccination for the three consecutive days (June 21-22-23).
The areas in pink are the largest vaccination coverage states of India – Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka. (Maharashtra belongs to both groups).
Fun Fact – Jharkhand is the only state that did not see a sudden rise in vaccination numbers on June 21st . In all other states, the numbers spiked suddenly.
