On the advice of the Prime Minister, the President of India, Smt. Draupdi Murmu, appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
He takes over from CJI NV Ramana, who remits office on August 26th. Justice U U Lalit will take oath on August 27th 2022.
The judges of the Supreme Court retire at the age of 65. Therefore, Justice U U Lalit will leave office on November 8th,
About Justice UU Lalit
Justice Lalit was an advocate before becoming a judge. He was appointed to the Supreme Court as a judge on August 13th, 2014.
He has practised in the Bombay High Court, Delhi High Court, and the Supreme Court in Delhi.
How is the Chief Justice of India selected?
To be a CJI, a person must be below 65 years of age. They should have served as a judge of the High Court or a similar court for at least 5 years or should be an advocate or jurist for 10 years.
Usually, the senior most serving judge is selected to be the CJI.
