14 year old Leon Mendonca of Goa has become India’s 67th Chess Grandmaster (those who get ELO ration of more than 2500 points). He won the third and final norm at the Vergani Cup Tournament in Italy. He has played 16 tournaments and improved his ELO (a rating system for measuring playing strength relative to opponents) rating from 2452 to 2544 points. He won his first grandmaster norm at the Rio Chess GM Round Robin in October and second at the Budapest event in November. Chennai player G Akash had become the country’s 66th Grandmaster in July.
