Delhi, Jun 2: Last Thursday, we explained the Social Media Intermediary Guidance and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021.
Social media companies with over 50 lakh (5 million) subscribers were given three months to comply with the rules. That deadline ended on May 26th. These are the updates from the previous week:
- Google has submitted to the Delhi High Court that its search engine is notcovered by the intermediary rules. Google has said that it is an intermediary but not a social media intermediary.
- Facebook, Google, Telegram, and other intermediaries have started submitting the details of the appointments with the Government of India. The appointments that have been announced so far are:
- Twitter:Dharmendra Chatur, based in Bengaluru (Interim appointment)
- Facebook: Spoorthi Priya, based in Delhi
- Whatsapp: Paresh B Lal, based in Hyderabad
- Google: Joe Grier, based in California, USA
- Twitter has indicated that it would like some changes in the guidelines.
Today, Russia also passed a bill that requires internet companies with more than 500,000 daily users to either have a local office or exit the country.
