India wins its first gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo, Aug 7: India got its first gold in Athletics at the Tokyo Olympics. Neeraj Chopra bagged the gold medal in men’s javelin throw. His first attempt was a throw of 87.03m. His second was a throw of 87.58m. His third attempt was 76.79m. His fourth and fifth attempts were declared foul. His last throw was 84.24m. He is India’s second-ever individual, after shooter Abhinav Bindra, to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Jakub Vadlejch (best throw: 86.67m) and Vitezslav Vesely (best throw: 85.44) of the Czech Republic won the silver and bronze medal respectively.

Wrestling: In his Olympic debut, Bajrang Punia won the bronze medal in men’s 65kg freestyle category. He defeated Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan 8-0. He is the sixth Indian wrestler to win a medal in the Olympics.

Golf: Golfer Aditi Ashok narrowly missed a medal and finished 4th in women’s individual stroke play. Nella Kordy of the USA won the gold. Mone Inami of Japan and Lydia Ko of New Zealand clinched the silver and bronze medals respectively. Diksha Dagar tied 50 in the same category.
