India has been ranked 46th in Global Innovation Index (GII). The Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual ranking of countries by their capacity for and success in innovation. It is published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in partnership with other organizations. It is based on 80 indicators covering education, political environment, business, and infrastructure.
The GII 2021 reports that Switzerland, Sweden, United States of America, United Kingdom, and Republic of Korea got the first five positions respectively. India has moved up two places as compared to last year’s 48th position. India is leading in the Central and Southern Asia region. In the lower middle-income group based on per capita GDP, India stands 2nd, after Vietnam. India is the world leader in Information, Communication & Technology (ICT) services. India also holds top ranks in domestic industry diversification (12th rank) and graduates in science and engineering (12th rank).
The improvement is due to immense knowledge capital, a vibrant start-up ecosystem, and the work done by public and private research organizations. The Department of Atomic Energy, Science and Technology, Biotechnology and Space have played a vital role in enriching the National Innovation Ecosystem.
