Delhi, Nov 11: The most notable elections in India this month were the Bihar Assembly elections, right?
Maybe. But did you know that the Election Commission of India (ECI results) also managed assembly by-elections in 59 constituencies across 11 states (brackets indicate the number of constituencies going to polls):
Madhya Pradesh(28 constituencies), Gujarat (8), Chhattisgarh (1) , Haryana (1) , Jharkhand(2), Karnataka (2), Manipur (5), Nagaland (2), Telangana (1), Odisha (2), and Uttar Pradesh (7).
There was also one Lok Sabha by-election in Bihar. This was won by the Janta Dal (United). Read the details of these by-election results below. For now, let’s come back to Bihar Assembly.
Who was contesting?
In Bihar, there are two major groups. Let’s understand the election results in terms of these 2 groups.
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) continued its alliance with the Janata Dal (United) (JD (U)), the party of the current chief minister, Nitish Kumar. This group calls itself the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The other 2 parties in the group are the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM).
The other major group calls itself the Mahagathbandhan (the great alliance). This group has 5 parties. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Shri Tejashwi Yadav, is the leader of this group. The other parties in this group are the Indian National Congress (INC or just Congress), Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (Liberation), the Communist Party of India, and the Communist Party of India- Marxist.
Other than these, there are independent candidates, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
The next paragraph tells us how each group fared.
As you can see, the ruling NDA crossed the halfway mark. Shri Nitish Kumar will continue as the Chief Minister of the state.
