India elected to UN panel on women

India has been elected as a member of the 45 member United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women (UNCSW), a body of the Economic
and Social Council (ECOSOC).

This membership would be till 2025.

India, Afghanistan, and China had contested the elections to the Commission on Status of Women. India and Afghanistan got voted in, and would join Austria, Argentina, Israel, Dominican Republic, Latvia, Turkey, Nigeria, and Zambia, as members.


Ambassador TS Tirumurti, permanent representative of India to the United Nations, said, “It’s a ringing endorsement of our commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all our endeavours. We thank member states for their support.”

The UNCSW is described as the UN organ promoting gender equality, women rights, and the empowerment of women. It was established in 1946.

Every year, representatives gather at UN Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress in gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards, and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality.
