In India, the month of September has been dedicated to the beautiful, colourful, winged small wonders – the butterflies. There are 1,400 species of butterflies in India. They play an intricate part in the ecosystem and are one of the biological indicators in determining the health of the environment.
Butterfly enthusiasts, experts, and organisations were involved in conducting various activities and competitions for the common people. Butterfly counting was held between September 14-20, when people were counting and capturing pictures of the butterflies they see around them and uploading them on the digital platforms such as the India Biodiversity portal, iNaturalist, and ifoundbutterflies.
Experts have selected seven species of butterflies and are conducting an online poll to select the national butterfly. The main purpose of the event is to popularise butterfly species and help conserve them.
