India Assumes Rotating Presidency of UNSC

New Delhi, Aug 2: India assumed the presidency of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August
on Sunday, 1st August 2021. India took over the presidency from France.

Indian will decide the United Nations agenda for the month and will coordinate important meetings on a range of issues. Key events will be organized in three areas:

  1. Maritime security 2. Peacekeeping 3. Counter terrorism

Indian PM Narendra Modi is expected to chair the meeting on 9th August. He will become the first Indian PM to chair a
UNSC meeting. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN – T.S. Tirumurti, External Affairs Minister – S.
Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary – Harsh Shringla will also preside over high-level meetings of global importance.
The meetings will be held virtually.

UNSC is made of 5 permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and 10 non-permanent members (Estonia, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Niger, Norway, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia, and Vietnam). India began its 2 year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on 1st January 2021.
