Imran Khan Niazi is no longer the Prime Minister of Pakistan

Report by Shuchi Giridhar

Imran Khan has been removed from the post of Prime minister of Pakistan.

A week ago, Pakistan’s government, led by the then Prime Minister Imran Khan, faced a no-confidence motion by the Opposition.

This was only the 3rd time in history that a No-confidence motion was initiated against a Prime Minister in Pakistan.

Before the votes, debate happens on the floor of the Parliament.

The voting was scheduled to take place on 3rd April 2022.

But just as the voting was about to begin, Imran Khan, using Article 5 of the constitution, requested that the no-confidence motion be cancelled, saying that it was unconstitutional (going against the constitution).

He also alleged that a foreign hand was involved in this matter.

Security Agencies of Pakistan had not, by then, confirmed the presence of any plan to topple the government of Imran Khan. There was also no court order indicating that the no confidence motion should be stopped or postponed.

However, the Speaker of the House cancelled the voting.

Imran Khan then requested the President to dissolve the National Assembly (the Parliament of Pakistan) and the President agreed.

Dissolving the National Assembly would automatically result in the conduct of fresh elections within 90 days.

Imran Khan had planned to stay in power as a Care Taker PM during this interim period.

However, due to pressure from the Opposition parties, the President identified Imran Khan as the Prime Minister of Pakistan and requested him to be an interim Prime Minister till a Care Taker Prime Minister is appointed for the period until the Fresh Elections.

In the history of Pakistan, no Prime minister has completed a full five-year term of rule.
