India, Apr 03: IIT Delhi becomes the first Central Government- funded Technical Institute to reduce its carbon footprint (amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere due to our activities) by more than 50%. It is one of the large consumers of power. The institute’s mission is to make its campus smart, sustainable, and green. With this target, it is continuously working on expanding its green power (electricity generated using zero emission sources link wind – water, solar, etc) purchase portfolio. IIT Delhi has 2.7 MWp (Megawatts- peak) of rooftop solar PV (Photo Voltaic) installation. To this, it has now added a bilateral 2 MW power purchase contract with a hydro power generator in Himachal Pradesh. With this purchase, the institute’s power portfolio has 4.7 MW of green power against the contract demand of about 8.5 MW. This is equivalent to compensate about 14,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This is IIT Delhi’s contribution towards achieving the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target as part of climate change pledge by the Government of India during the Paris agreement.
