How many Indians have given up their Indian citizenship?

The External Affairs Minister, Shri S Jaishankar, responded to a question in the Parliament and shared how many Indians had renounced (given up) their Indian citizenship in recent years.

The data from 2011 onwards is:

Indians who renounced their citizenship from 2011 – 2022

The number increased 8% from 2012 to 2013.

Then, it lowered again in 2014.

After this, we notice a small growth of 1-2% per year until 2015. In 2016, the year-on-year growth was 7.7% – much higher than the average of 1.8% from 2012 to 2015.

2019 saw a 7% increase again, after 2 years of relative stability.

2020 numbers are exceptionally low, presumably because of the Covid pandemic. From 2021 onwards, the numbers grow again.
