Electricity, as you know, is used to power most things we use in our daily lives.
It is used for our gadgets, our electric vehicles, electric trains, etc. Electricity is critical for farming, and for industry (manufacturing). Without electricity, all the data centers, our service sector (which is dependent upon computers and networks), will stop working.
In short, electricity makes the world go round.
But, how do we get electricity?
The most basic way to produce electricity, is by burning coal. This is called Thermal energy.
Other than this, there are renewable sources that can be used to generate electricity.
Breakup of India’s energy production
As of December 2020, 75% of all power produced in India was through thermal power plants.
Over the last few years, India has worked hard to promote RES (Renewable Energy Sources) for electricity production.
You might have heard of subsidies for setting up rooftop solar power plants in India.
According to the Ministry of Power, as of 31st January, 2022, only 60% of our installed capacity is thermal. This means that about 40% of our installed capacity is now renewable energy based.
Even traditional thermal power plant companies like NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) are investing in green energy.
