Among many interesting marine species, Octopuses are the most fascinating creatures. But do you know, how does Octopus taste it’s meal by touching them?
They have eight arms on which there are two rows of suckers. The suction cups on an octopus’ arms, called suckers. One of the ways octopuses use their arms is by wrapping them around prey or other objects. While doing so, they are both touching it and tasting it.
Scientists are now researching how octopuses use their “touch-taste” sense, activating sensory receptors on their suckers. The study gives new insight into how the creatures use their long flexible tentacles to identify both danger and delight in the waters around them. The information carried to the nervous system of the octopus after touching the organism. Which decides whether to strangle its prey or continue looking for it.
Nick Bellono is an assistant professor of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University. Talking about this study, Nick said-“They’re always exploring their environment. They’re just a big muscle practically”.
