This summer, many parts of the world are reporting higher than average mean temperatures.
Mean temperature is the average temperature a place experiences during a month/day/any other time period.
Here is a list of places that have reported higher than average temperatures this year. We compiled this list largely based on the work of the Twitter handle – @extremetemps and some of our own research.
Japan
Japan has been recording above average temperature for most of June. According to official figures, about 15,000 people had to visit the hospital because of heat stroke related conditions.
The temperature was above 36 degrees in Tokyo, and in other parts of the country.
Because of the heat, people used a lot of air conditioning. This led to a surge(sudden rise) in the demand for electricity.
In early July, however, the issue turned from temperature to temperature + rains.
Western Europe
A new heat wave is looming in Western Europe with a plume of hot air from Morocco rising north where today the temperature rose to 44.8C at Kasba Tadla (500m) and Marrakech and 44.5C at Beni Bellal. Portugal will be directly hit first by this intense heat wave. (Text and image from the Twitter handle – @extremetemps)
Italy and Spain are already reporting a drought condition. Italy’s main river, Po, has become smaller, and it is also reported that sea water has gone to the river as a result of the drought.
Far East Russia
USA
The pink towards the West is a Red Flag warning – which is warning for wildfires occuring.
The magenta in the cental and eastern side is heat wave alert.
The orange is warning for expected thunderstorms.
