35-year-old Gabriel Boric became Chile’s youngest President-elect after winning the majority in the Chilean General Election 2021.
Boric will assume his responsibilities as the President of the Republic of Chile at the La Moneda Palace (the official seat of the President of Chile) in March 2022.
The President is the head of the state and head of the government.
His party, Social Convergence, secured 56% votes in the election, while his opponent Jose Antonio Kast’s Republican Party secured 44% votes.
He won by a margin of nearly a million votes out of 8.3 million ballots cast by 15 million voters. This is the most a party has secured in the history of Chilean elections.
Social Convergence is a party with left-wing political viewpoints. In politics, left wing usually means a party that believes in socialism. The Republican Party is of right-wing political viewpoint. This broadly means they like to preserve existing conditions and limit changes. This is a simplistic definition of these two viewpoints though they stand for much more in politics.
Sebastian Pinera is the current President of the Republic of Chile.
