First Solar Eclipse of This Year

USA, June 10: The first solar eclipse of the year 2021 occurred yesterday. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the earth and the sun and blocks the light of the sun. When the moon is very far from the earth, it does not block the entire view of the sun. This creates a ring around the moon causing the sun to look like an annulus (a Latin word meaning ‘ring’). This eclipse is called “the ring of fire”. This annular eclipse was visible only in parts of Canada, Greenland, and Northern Russia. It was visible as partial eclipse in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere like the United States of America, Northern Europe, Asia, and Africa. In India it was visible only in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. The solar eclipse started around 01:42 PM (IST) and lasted until 06:41 PM (IST).

The duration of the maximum eclipse was about three minutes and fifty-one seconds.
