To be towed to Bitter Lake to assess damages
New Delhi, Mar 29: On March 23rd , Ever Given, a 400-meters-long container (a ship that carries goods) got stuck as it was passing through the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal is a man-made canal that helps ships avoid the entire route around the African peninsula, by allowing them to go directly to the Mediterranean Sea. The canal is narrow, and a long ship getting stuck meant that no other ships or boats could pass through the canal. This created a traffic jam of ships on both sides of the canal. The rescue was not easy. It’s bow (the front portion of a ship) was stuck in sand. Digging was done to increase the depth of the water in that area.
Rescuers also tried to make the most of the high tides. On Monday, 15 tugboats were used in an overnight operation to try and bring the ship to the center of the canal. As a result of this, the ship finally floated. It will now be towed to a lake to check for damage. The canal will also be repaired.
