Boston, Oct 30: Mars-sized smallest “rogue planet” of Milky Way is found by a team of Polish Astronomers. Till date, above 4,000 extrasolar planets have been discovered. Though many of the known exoplanets do not follow those in our solar system, they have one thing in general—they all orbit around a star.
What is a Rogue Planet?
A rogue planet is a planetary-mass object that does not orbit a star directly. These are because of the fact:
- They get ejected from the planetary system in which they have formed.
- Never been gravitationally bound to any star.
Andrzej Udalski, the co-author of a new study, said, “Our discovery demonstrates that low-mass free-floating planets can be detected and characterized using ground-based telescopes”. He gave this statement while announcing the find and principal investigator of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project.
