New Delhi, Aug 18: The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF-India) recently performed a dragonfly census in New Delhi and its surrounding areas, in conjunction with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), and celebrated Dragonfly Day on August 18. It’s the second event of its kind dedicated to dragonflies and damselflies, with the goal of conducting a census and raising awareness about their importance.
In the New Delhi and NCR area, a total of 51 distinct species have been reported.
Dragonflies are key bio-indicators of an area’s ecological health. They devour mosquitoes and other insects that transmit life-threatening diseases such as Malaria and Dengue fever. Plants, plankton, animals, and bacteria are examples of bioindicators that are used to monitor the health of the natural ecosystem.
