Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated Arunachal Pradesh’s first greenfield airport (Greenfield Airport is an airport built on undeveloped land), at Hollangi, Itanagar.

Its name is the Donyi Polo Airport (Donyi means sun and Polo means moon in Tibeto-Burman language).

This is the 3rd airport in Arunachal Pradesh and the 16th airport in the North-East.

The other two airports at Arunachal Pradesh are Tezu Airport and Passighat Airport.

The foundation stone of the Donyi Polo airport was laid in 2019. It took nearly 4 years to complete the construction.

About the airport

The airport covers an area of 694 acres and has a capacity of 200 people, although it can contain 300 passengers as well.

It was built at a cost of Rs. 645 crores.

It has a 2300m runway that can be operated in all weather conditions.

The airport encourages renewable energy, efficient use of energy, and recycling.

It is eco-friendly and has LED lights everywhere.

Three B-A-320 type aircrafts can be parked at 1 parking apron (a parking apron is a place where crafts are parked).

Mi-17 helicopters can also be parked in a special apron.

Airbus A320 and Boeing 737s can also operate at the airport.

The Airport has an Instrumental Landing System (ILS – A radio navigation system that guides the aircraft to the nearest runway at times of bad weather or in the night). The ILS is also equipped to with a CAT-1-Approach Lighting System that helps an aircraft to land with the help of Decision Height (DH) Runway Visual Range (RVR) and lightbars, light strips, or strobe lights (a lamp that produces light flashes instead of being lit up all the time).
