Dholavira added to UNESCO Heritage Sites

Delhi, Jul 28: Dholavira in Gujarat is a site of the Indus Valley civilisation (also called the Saraswati- Indus Valley civilisation).

On Tuesday, the site was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the first site of this historic civilisation to be recognised as a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Why is Dholavira important?

  • Dholavira was inhabited for all the three phases of Harappan civilisation – Early, Mature, and Late.
  • The city has a very good system of water networks. This network includes wells, drains, and conduits to conserve water.
  • Other than seals, there is only one archaeological object on which the IVC script was found – a signboard with 10 symbols. That signboard was found at Dholavira.
  • While most Harappan sites have mud bricks or clay bricks, Dholavira has examples of stone construction.
