Democrats of the United States House of Representatives are planning to impeach (remove a government official from office) President Donald Trump for a second time during his presidency, even though there are only eleven days until President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration (swearing-in ceremony), which President Trump will not be attending. Democrats have support from some Republicans and plan to start impeachment processes next week unless President Trump resigns “immediately”. House Democrats want to impeach the president because of his perceived role in the chaos that ensued on Wednesday, when protesters stormed the Capitol Building while Vice President Mike Pence was presiding over the official ceremony for declaring Joe Biden’s victory. Another reason for impeachment is Trump’s efforts to overturn the US 2020 election and declare himself the winner. If President Trump is impeached, he may not be able to run for president again in 2024 if Congress deems him unsuitable for office. Calls for impeachment by Democratic leaders and some Republicans arose after Vice President Pence did not acknowledge his power to invoke the 25th Amendment, where the vice president and the president’s cabinet have the power to send a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Democrat Nancy Pelosi) declaring the president unfit for duty, taking his power away.
