These are the updates on Cyclone Nivar.
Cyclone Nivar is a cyclonic storm approaching India from the South- West. Most cyclonic storms hit India from this direction. Landfall started at about 2300 hours – between Cuddalore and Puducherry.
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are the impacted state/UT. Andhra Pradesh is on alert too.
Southern Railways has diverted (started using another route) some of its trains. Bus services have been temporarily stopped (suspended) in 7 districts. Chennai airport is also closed for the night.
The Tamil Nadu government has extended the holiday to Thursday in 16 districts.
During the day, the storm became stronger and is now in the category of ‘very severe cyclonic storm’. On a 7-point scale of severity, this is the 5th highest level.
Our reader, Shivani M, made a rain gauge at home to measure the rainfall in Chennai. She recorded 140 mm from 9 pm Tuesday to 9 am Wednesday, and 110 mm from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday, making it about 250 mm of rain in 23 hours!
