Cyclone Nivar likely to make landfall

A very severe cyclonic storm called ‘Nivar’ is likely to make landfall (movement of cyclone from water to land) between the coast of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, between Karaikal and Mamallapuram.

A public holiday has been announced on 25th November to keep people away from the coast line.

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) said a storm surge of about 2m above sea level is likely around the time of landfall. Nearly 1,200 National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) rescue troopers have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, and 800 others are on standby.

A red alert has been sounded in the area, and all fishing activity has been suspended (temporarily stopped).
