Flood alert in Mumbai and Thane
Mumbai, June 2: Mumbai is on red alert as it braces for a cyclone after 129 years in June – Cyclone Nisarga. A deep depression in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a cyclonic storm. It will further turn into a severe cyclonic
storm and cross North Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigad district and Daman.
It is expected to make landfall close to Alibag, 94 kms south of Mumbai today afternoon.
This cyclone comes exactly 2 weeks after the cyclone Amphan, that caused severe damage in Odisha and West Bengal. The cyclone is expected to have wind speeds of 100-120km/h. 33 National Disaster teams have been deployed in the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
A 24×7 control room has been set up, and all armed forces have been kept on standby.
‘Nisarga’ means nature and was termed by Bangladesh. Climate experts blame unplanned urban development and destruction of mangroves contribute to the climate change, making cyclones more intense with stronger sustained winds and frequent too.
