Cyclone Mandous

Tamil Nadu has experienced heavy rainfall due to the landfall of Cyclone Mandous in Mamallapuram. Cyclone Mandous is now in Andhra Pradesh. 

Cyclone Mandous formed due to depression in the Bay of Bengal. It moved at a wind speed of 65-75 kmph which gusted to 85 kmph while entering land. It made landfall around 7:30pm on Friday to 1:30 am on Saturday. The cyclone has been recorded to be a slow-moving cyclone. Slow moving cyclones absorb a lot of moisture and cause a large amount of rain. They gain strength in form of wind speeds.

Vembakkam in Tiruvannamalai received over 25 cm of rainfall until 8:30 am on Saturday, 10th December. Panapakkam in Ranipet district has received 20 cm of rain and Kancheepuram has received 19 cm of rain. Chennai and Avadi have recorded 17 cm of rain. The highest amount of rain in Andhra Pradesh is in the Tirupati district which has received 281.5 millimetres of rain.

140 tonnes of plant and tree matter have been accumulated in Chennai due to the cyclone. Roads are littered with fallen trees. The cyclone has caused a lot of damage to the electricity too, with frequent power outages. Sand from Chennai’s Marina beach has reached the roads and the water has also overflowed in some places.
