uvier’s Beaked Whale Has Broken Its Own Record – For 3 Hours and 42 Minutes
In a recent study the researchers analysed 3,680 dives of 23 Cuvier’s beaked whales over a period of five years by satellite tagging (a tracking device is attached and location is calculated using satellites) them. One of them has shattered the previous record. It stayed underwater for 3 hours and 42 minutes.
They are able to stay underwater for so long because of low metabolic rates and high storage of oxygen in their blood and muscles, instead of their lungs. They also reduce their heart rate and stop the blood flow to certain parts of the body. Their streamlined body shape also helps them to glide inside the water with minimal usage of oxygen.
