In March, a common crane was fitted with a GPS tag. Shortly afterwards, she took off on a journey to distant North Kazakhstan. On October 10th, Migratory Bird Day, she returned to the exact site from where she took off. The picture on the right shows the route that she took over distant mountains – to go and return. After the record of the bar-tailed godwit (in yesterday’s paper) and this one, we bet you will not use the term ‘bird- brained’ the same way – ever again. These bird brains appear to be equipped with some incredible geographical positioning.
