The North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) and the International Vegetarian Union appointed October 1st as World Vegetarian Day in 1978. This day marks the kickoff to Vegetarian Awareness Month, which lasts all through October. NAVS founded this day in order to spread awareness about the benefits of vegetarianism. - Learn and educate yourself about the benefits of vegetarianism.
Chinese National Day
In China, October 1st is marked as Chinese National Day in celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
This day is celebrated enthusiastically in China, with the hoisting of China’s flag in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and an extravagant parade which concludes with fireworks. The Chinese National Day was expanded into a 7-day holiday in 1999 by the Chinese government, during which many Chinese families go on vacations or visit relatives.
International Day of Older Persons
In December of 1990, the United Nations appointed October 1st as the International Day of Older Persons under resolution 45/106, in order to ensure the rights and address the violations against older persons in our modern world. This year, the UN plans to focus on the theme “Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations,” which will stand to look at how the promotion of solidarity through intergenerational justice can offer long-term solutions to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals set up by the UN.
Cyprus International Day
Cyprus International Day, celebrated on October 1st, marks the day that the island country of Cyprus gained independence from the British in 1960. Technically, the London-Zurich agreements, which led to the independence of Cyprus, were signed on August 16th but because of the summer heat and the tourist season, Cyprus’s Independence Day was moved to October 1st. On this day, an extravagant parade consisting of military tanks and other armories is held and a speech from the President is seen. A holiday is also given to shops and businesses across the country.
