Coast Guard commissions its second air squadron

The 845 squadron (CG) of the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned by Director General V S Pathania, Indian Coast Guard, in Kochi today.

This squadron is commanded by Commandant Kunal Naik and manned by nine officers and 35 coast guard personnel.

The unique thing about the squadron is that it is an air squadron.

This squadron will help India protect its Western sea front (Quick: Can you point out Kochi on the India map?).

The Indian Coast Guard now has 12 Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK-IIIs. These machines have been designed and made in India.

The ALH -MK III helicopters have gull glass cockpit, strong searchlights, advanced communication and navigation systems. It has a heavy machine gun and a detachable Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).

The Indian Navy, Air Force, and Indian Coast Guard have been using ALH – MK III helicopters for reconnaissance (reconnaissance means to get to know something better) and rescue missions.
