India is the world’s largest exporter of rice
India is the world’s second largest producer and the largest exporter of rice. China is the world’s largest importer of rice. In December 2020, China imported rice from India.
In January 2021, Vietnam also imported Indian rice.
Both these countries have not imported rice from India for at least 2 decades.
According to the information from the industry, India exported rice worth USD 5323 million from Jan – Nov 2020. Interestingly, basmati rice contributed 2673 million USD, and all other varieties of rice contributed 2650 million USD.
Some interesting facts
- Vietnam earned about 3 billion USD from its rice exports in 2020. Broken rice from Vietnam is available at about 500$ per tonne, compared to India’s $380 per tonne price.
- Vietnam has indicated that it would like to stock about 270,000 tonnes of rice for its own use.
