Chess Olympiad update

The 44th Chess Olympiad has been organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs(FIDE) from 28th July to 10th August, 2022, at Chennai, India.  

In the open category, 187 teams are playing for the Hamilton Russell cup and 162 teams from the women’s category are playing for the Vera Menchik cup.

The winner of the Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy will be decided by the performance of the team of a country in both categories.

National chess federations are competing in this Olympiad for the gold medals, trophies, and the title of the ‘Strongest Chess Nation In The World’.

A player from one national team should compete against a player from another national team in the Olympiad. There have been a total of 11 rounds in this Olympiad.

The opening ceremony was held on 28th July at Nehru Indoor Stadium with much excitement.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, was present on this occasion along with the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Mr. M.K Stalin.

The mentor for India’s six teams is GM (Grandmaster) Vishwanathan Anand.

Three of the six teams are participating in the open category and the other three in the women’s category. Let us look at the teams in the open category.

• Team A – Vidit Gujrathi , Pentala Harikrishna, Krishnan Sasikiran, Arjun Erigaisi, and S L Narayanan. 

• Team B – Praggnanandhaa R, Nihal Sarin, D Gukesh, Adhiban Baskaran, and Raunak Sadhwani. 

• Team C – Surya Shekhar Ganguly, S P Sethuraman, Abhijeet Gupta, Karthikeyan Murali, Abhimanyu Puranik.

 Now let us take a look at the other three teams in the women’s category.

 • Team A – Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, Tania Sachdev, Vaishali R, and Bhakti Kulkarni.

 • Team B – National champions Soumya Swaminathan, Mary Ann Gomes, and Padmini Rout along with Vantika Agrawal and Divya Deshmukh.

 • Team C – Easha Karvade, Sahithi Varshini. Pratyusha Bodda, P V Nandhidhaa, Vishwa Vasnawala. The coaches of the Indian teams are:

• GM Pravin Thipsay – Head of the Delegation.

• GM Srinath Narayanan- coach for the first open team 

• GM R B Ramesh- coach of second open team 

• GM Abhijit Kunte – coach for the women’s first team

• GM Swapnil Dhopade – coach for the second women’s team.
