New Delhi, Nov 16: Guinness World Record certificate was awarded to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for constructing and black topping the world’s highest motorable road, the Defence Ministry announced. The road was built at Umlingla Pass in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The 52-kilometre long Chisumle to Demchok tarmac road passes through the 19,024 feet high Umlingla Pass. It broke the previous record of a road in Bolivia, which connects to its volcano Uturuncu at 18,953 feet. This road was built with much difficulty because of the tough terrain, -40 degree temperature, and very high altitude.
It has been constructed at altitudes higher than the North and South Base Camps of Mount Everest which are at altitudes of 16,900 feet and 17,598 feet respectively.
This road has helped to improve the socio-economic conditions and to promote tourism in Ladakh.
