Book Review: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Review by Vedant Hingu

The book is written by Roald Dahl.

The main characters in the book are Charlie, Mr. Wonka and the other children.

My favorite part of the book is the tour of the chocolate factory when many funny things happen.
The book teaches us that we should be well-mannered and not be greedy.
Recommended reading for kids 8 years +.

Book Summary

This book is about Charlie, a poor boy who lives with his parents and grandparents. He is so poor that he
gets to eat only one chocolate every year on his birthday.

But he loves Willy Wonka’s chocolates, and he crosses the factory daily on his way to school.
One day, Mr. Willy Wonka announces that some chocolates have a golden ticket. The children who
find a chocolate with a golden ticket can come for one day to the factory and will get also a lifetime
free supply of chocolates.

Four golden tickets are found by Augustus Gloop (he is greedy), Veruca Salt (she is spoilt), Violet Beaugarde (she always chews gum) and Mike Teevee (he likes to watch a lot of TV). The last ticket is found by Charlie when he buys a chocolate with a little money he found.

The 5 children go to visit Willy Wonka’s factory. They meet the Oompa Lompas – small people who work
in the factory. They see amazing things like chocolate waterfalls.

Certain incidents happen in the factory and one by one, all the ill-mannered children are sent out from
there. At the end, only Charlie is left in the factory.

Mr. Wonka tells Charlie that he had made the golden ticket plan in order to find a good, well-mannered
child. He had decided that he will give away his factory to such a child. So, he calls Charlie’s family and tells them that once Charlie is an adult, he will own the factory. So, Charlie and his family would no longer be poor.
