Delhi, Nov 2: Madhya Pradesh, Nov 7: Panna National Park in Madhya Pradesh has been awarded the status of UNESCO. Every year UNESCO refreshes its list of biosphere reserves in India and adds those that have done a remarkable job in conservation of biodiversity. Panna National Park, recognized as a critical tiger habitat and appreciated for its work on tiger conservation.
The population of tigers in Panna increased remarkably last year and the number reached 50 from 0 in the last 10 years (as per India’s tiger census – 2018). Panna’s addition to the prestigious UNESCO list would help the reserve in finding innovative Biosphere Reserve (protected areas meant for the conservation of plants and animals) approaches in conservation of wildlife and its sustainability.
Formed in 1981, Panna National Park got the status of Project Tiger Reserve in 1994. It was declared as a Biosphere Reserve in India in 2011 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). It is spread across an area of approx. 542.67 sq. km. and this forest is a natural habitat to many other wild animals like leopards, Indian wolf, etc. In addition to Panna, sites from Maldives, Mongolia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Comoros, Kazakhstan, Peru, Benin, and Trinidad & Tobago, also given the status of UNESCO biosphere reserve.
