Archaeologists discover Mayan Artefacts in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Report by Ananya Singh

Archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico have discovered Mayan artefacts along the train construction project, Maya Train, in
Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

These artefacts consist of 2500 pre-historic Hispanic (relating to Spain or to Spanish-speaking
countries) structures, 80 burial sites, and thousands of vessels and fragments. The discovery of these artefacts will help in expanding the knowledge of daily life, trade, and society during the Mayan Period.

How did they do this?

This find occurred with the help of 3 technologies:
GPS georeferencing – Comparing a digital image to real physical places.
Satellite topographic images – Images of the physical features of an area taken from a satellite.
LIDAR sensors – Light Detection and Ranging. A method of measuring distance using lasers.

It is being estimated that the unearthed vessels were used by the elite and that the Maya inhabited the area from the Middle Preclassic Period (began in 700 BC) to as late as the end of the Late Classic Period (850 AD).

Note: The Maya(n) Civilization is noted for its highly sophisticated and developed writing system.
