The vessel will be dismantled at Alang and sold as scrap.

INS Viraat is also known as the Grand Old Lady of the Indian Navy. It got decommissioned in 2017 after 30 years of service in the Indian Navy and 27 years prior to that in the British Royal Navy as HMS Hermes.

Attempts to convert the majestic vessel into a museum or a restaurant did not fructify (become fruitful). Alang based Shree Ram Group won the bid for the ship’s dismantling.

Alang is the world’s biggest ship breaking yard.

This brings to an end a glorious era in the history of the Indian Navy.

Like many other Indians, we, at The Children’s Post, cannot offer a fond enough farewell to the Grand Old Lady of the Indian Navy. So, we have created a gallery for you. All images in this gallery are from the internet and all rights belong to their original owners. Where we found the photographer’s name, we have added it.

We thank everyone who took and shared these images on this momentous occasion for India.
