A 500 Meter Tall Coral Reef Found In Great Barrier Reef

Taller Than The The Eiffel Tower

Ocean and Sea inherit unique and wonderful species in them. While exploring the ocean surrounding Australia, Australian scientists discovered a massive, detached coral reef measuring more than 500 meters tall – taller than some of the tallest buildings in the world. This was the first to be discovered in over 120 years. It was found in the offshore Cape York area of the Great Barrier Reef near the Australian state of Queensland.

The underwater robot – SuBastian explored the new reef. The base of the blade-like reef is 1.5 kilometres wide which then rises to 500 meters from 40 meters below the sea surface. It has an abundance of sponges, sea fans, and soft corals serving as a home for plenty of reef fish species.

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest naturally formed coral reef system (an underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals) in the world, covering over 2,300 kilometres and is home to diverse marine life.
